Throne of Eldraine spoiler season has begun with the release of several cards yesterday.

The first is the much talked about new planeswalker Oko.

Oko is a Fay shapeshifting planeswalker with a troubled past.  His card introduces a new mechanic Food.

Speculation in the community was that a Food token would allow a player to give a creature +1/+1 or -1/-1 counter.  With the release of Golden Egg and Gilded Goose late last night we now know that a food token allows a player to sacrifice a food token to gain 3 life. Gilded Goose also allows you to sacrifice a Food Token to add a mana of any color.

Here are all Oko’s abilities

+2: Create a Food token.

+1: Target artifact or creature loses all abilities and becomes a green Elk creature with base power and toughness 3/3.

−5: Exchange control of target artifact or creature you control and target creature an opponent controls with power 3 or less.

The other plus one ability is to make a target artifact or creature loses all abilities and become a 3/3 elk.  This can allow a player to eliminate the biggest threat your opponent has or can turn one of your weaker creatures into a 3/3 making it a bigger threat.  Oko’s minus five shows off his shapeshifter ability. This allows you to take control of one of your opponent’s threats and give back a weak creature. I see Oko fitting well into Bant or Simic Flash or Ramp.  His abilities play well with the general structure of the deck and gives it more power to deal with threats.

The other two cards give us our first look at the new storybook card.

Lovestruck Beast and Flaxen Intruder gives us a page one storybook sorcery ability.  Based on the two cards previewed, the sorcery ability appears to allow you to create an additional creature or creatures.  In addition to this sorcery ability, page two of the storybook places a condition on the creature. This condition either places a limitation on the creature or gives it an additional ability.  Flaxen Intruder’s page two gives it the ability to destroy an artifact or enchantment when it deals combat damage to a player while Lovestruck Beast can’t attack without you controlling a 1/1 creature.  As more cards are previewed, I expect we will get additional abilities that will affect game play. What type of deck these cards will go into is unknown at this point? I think the ability will add flavor to the game.

Until next time.  Good luck finding your win condition!
