What a way to get the Core 2020 preview season underway with three new Chandras. I cannot what to make a Mono-Red deck around them.

Let’s look at each of the new cards. First is Chandra, Novice Pyromancer the uncommon version.

I am excited about her ability to add two red mana. This can give you seven mana to work with on turn five making it possible to cast just about any spell you want ahead of curse. Her +1 ability works well with Chandra, Acolyte of Flame ability to create 1/ 1 Elementals. Her -2 ability gives you the option of dealing direct damage to your opponent or damaging a creature or planeswalker. This ability may make it risky to activate a minus ability on other planeswalkers because Chandra can kill it on the next turn.

The rare is Chandra, Acolyte of Flame: a three-mana planeswalker with upside. This first zero cost ability puts a loyalty counter on each red planeswalker that will allow you to rack up loyalty counters on your planeswalkers that have ultimate abilities. Can you imagine activating Chandra, Fire Artisan ultimate on turn five? Acolyte makes this possible. Her other zero cost ability creates two 1/1 red Elemental creature tokens with haste that are sacrificed at the beginning of the next end step. Her -2 ability allows you to cast a target instant or sorcery from your graveyard. Can you image being able to play a free Light Up the Stage or Lightning Strike. I expect this card to see a lot of play in red decks.

The last new addition to your Chandra collection is Chandra, Awakened Inferno.

The first big advantage of Awakened Inferno is that she cannot be countered. This makes her a great card against control decks. Her +2 ability puts your opponent on a clock because they get an emblem that deals 1 damage to them at the beginning of their upkeep. This will give Chandra 8 loyalty counters on the turn she enters play. Against creature heavy decks, her -3 ability can be a board wipe by doing three damage to each non-Elemental creature. I am not as excited about the minus X ability because it only affect creatures or planeswalkers, but the ability to takeout a troublesome planeswalker or creature is a good ability.

I cannot wait to get my hands on these cards. I see Mono-Red Planeswalkers as a deck I want to try. I will definitely be looking for ways use these new Chandras.

Until next time, good luck finding your win condition!
